Percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (BMV)

Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty (BMV) is an ideal therapy for mitral valve stenosis, which is a narrowing of the valve between the left upper and lower heart chambers. This procedure widens the mitral valve to facilitate easier blood flow through the heart. Dr. Samin, an expert in BMV procedure in India, offers individualized treatment plans, compassionate care, and extensive knowledge to ensure the best results for patients.

Procedure

BMV is a minimally invasive procedure. A doctor inserts a tiny, flexible tube called a catheter into the heart through an artery in the arm or groin. Once the catheter reaches the constricted mitral valve, a balloon device at the end of the catheter is rapidly inflated. This inflation presses against the restricted or fused mitral valve leaflets, causing them to separate and stretch open. By expanding the mitral valve opening, the procedure increases the amount of blood that can pass from the left atrium into the left ventricle.

For your BMV procedure in India, a small incision is made in the groin to insert the catheter. The catheter is then pushed through a major blood vessel to the heart chamber. Your surgeon makes a small incision in the wall between the heart’s upper chambers to access the upper left chamber. A balloon-tipped customized catheter is then introduced. The balloon is placed within the constricted mitral valve and repeatedly inflated and deflated to widen the valve opening. Once the desired opening is achieved, the balloon is deflated and the catheter is safely withdrawn. The insertion site is dressed and compressed to stop the bleeding.

Indications

BMV is often recommended if:

– The majority of the mitral valve is in normal shape and there is moderate to severe stenosis.

– There is severe to moderate stenosis.

– There is pulmonary hypertension (elevated blood pressure in the lungs).

– The mitral valve is relatively healthy.

If you are pregnant or considering a procedure other than a cardiac procedure, your doctor may suggest a balloon valvotomy. However, balloon valvotomy is not suitable if you have mild to severe mitral valve regurgitation, significant calcium deposits in the mitral valve, or blood clots in the left atrium.

Effectiveness

After undergoing balloon valvuloplasty, 85% to 95% of patients experience satisfactory results and almost immediate symptom relief. The procedure does not cure the problem or make the valve normal, but it allows the heart’s valves to function correctly and permits blood to pass through. Enhanced blood flow alleviates symptoms, lowers blood pressure within the left atrium, and relieves lung congestion.
